Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be to join?

Roughly between 20-35 years. But if you don’t fit exactly into this age bracket and you feel like Ascend might be right for you, contact us; this is only a general guideline.

How long is the Project?

10 months (Sept.-June). You’d commit to living in the house as part of the community for that time. You will also have the option to stay in the house for July and August, for a nominal fee.

What will ALPs (Ascend Leadership Project Interns) actually do?

Some of the things the ALPs do include community building and prayer, spirituality and leadership workshops, retreats, spiritual direction, directed group or individual reading, service activities, outreach, etc.  The directors plan some of the activities in advance of move-in, whereas some of the activities are planned by the ALPs themselves shortly after move-in and after a period of discernment together.

Can I work?

Yes. ALP’s are encouraged to work or volunteer at least part-time, Monday-Friday, 9-5. It’s a good chance to practice balancing “real-world” responsibilities with an active and disciplined spiritual life; as well, you will need some money for food, entertainment, transportation and other incidental costs. Not every job would be a good fit with Ascend, though. You will need to be available certain evenings and on weekends to invest in the life of the community and participate in project activities.

Can I go to school (be a student)?

Yes. Ascend might be a really good fit for a part-time student or someone taking a reduced course load. Someone in a demanding academic program, though, would probably find it difficult to balance this with the community stuff.

So, what sort of time commitments are we really talking about here?

Community members can count on spending at least 2 nights a week and at least one full day (Sat. or Sun.) each weekend doing official Ascend activities.

I know I'm going to be away for a weekend next year. How much flexibility is there around the time commitments?

There's definitely some flexibility--we wouldn't want an issue like this to keep the right person from experiencing all that Ascend has to offer otherwise. However, part of the experience of Ascend is knowing the blessings of a "ministry of presence" for one another, so we do take the time commitments seriously. Contact us to talk about the specifics of your situation.

I'm already actively involved in an Edmonton-based ministry.

That's awesome! If the time commitment isn't prohibitive, there are many possibilities for your existing ministry passions to enrich the Ascend community and your experience of spiritual and leadership formation.  Would you be open to sharing your experiences in leadership in that ministry with the other ALPs? Would you be willing to lead the ALPs in a special project related to your ministry? We believe in building upon prior strengths, passions and relationships for the betterment of all. Contact us to talk about the specifics of your situation.

What does it cost?

Each ALP is expected to raise $3000 during the summer months (before moving in) from their home church and personal networks in support of the Ascend Leadership Project. Donors will be able to donate online and charitable tax receipts will be issued according to CRA guidelines. ALPs can also choose to pay some or all of this amount themselves rather than raising it, however developing a team of prayer and financial supporters is encouraged in order to invite the wider church into our mission. This $3000 covers all project expenses for the year, including housing, utilities, and project materials.

Will I have to share a room?

Some rooms are shared. Some rooms are singles. There’s a place on the application where you can indicate preference for either a single room or a shared room. Initial room assignments will be revisited at Christmas.

Will I have a curfew?

No, of course not. You’re an adult, right?

How do I apply?

You can request an application by clicking on the "Apply" tab at the top of this page and filling out the contact form.
